A College Station resident is being credited with saving the life of a 20-year-old Texas A&M University student trapped in her burning SUV.

Investigators say the SUV flipped over after it was hit by a dump truck in the southbound lanes of Highway 47 between Villa Maria Road and Leonard Road in Bryan.

“If you've seen the vehicle you would say no one walked away from this,” said Felix Chester who helped get the driver out of her SUV.

Chester was driving south on Highway 47 in his company van right behind the now mangled Ford Explorer that Nicolette Elvir was driving. He saw a dump truck that failed to yield the right of way and the SUV was going southbound on Highway 47 and slammed into the truck.

"When I first got up to the vehicle, I thought she was dead,” said Chester.

Police say Elvir was trapped. Felix and another good samaritan pulled her out of the SUV.

"We grabbed her legs and her shoulders and keep her as straight as possible as we were doing this and get her out of harm’s way,” Chester said.

Minutes later, Chester says, flames engulfed the SUV.

Investigators say if it wasn't for Chester and others who took a risk, a life could have been lost.

"You have to stop and help people the best we can…I am far from a hero I tell you. Our heroes wear a different type of uniform. I just go to work every day and happen to be there at that time."

Elvir was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
