Texas A&M Judo Claims 13th Straight State Title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M Judo wins the State Collegiate Judo title over Texas Tech and Texas State. Texas A&M Judo is undefeated in the 21st Century, winning the state title every year since 2000.

As a team, Texas A&M Judo has been dominate in the state. In the 90kg (198lb) division Texas A&M Judo swept the podium with a 1-2-3 finish. Graduate student Cory Klemachevich won all his matches by Ippon (Instant win) beating out teammates Ryan Wenzel (2nd) and Travis Brice (3rd)

In the 100kg (220lb) division Texas A&M Judo took the top two spots with Nathan Westbrook taking home the gold, Carlos Perez taking the silver and Luke Morgan just missing the medals with a 4th place finish.

Another gold medal for Texas A&M judo came from the 66kg (145lb) division. Graduate Student Arash Pourhabib overcame tough competition from Texas State and Texas Tech to take the gold medal. Also in the division, Esteban Valencia was one win short of fighting for a medal.

In the 73kg (161lb) division, new transfer student Sergio Cartagena was the lone A&M athlete and finished with a bronze medal.
The Texas A&M women were full of silver. Newcomers to the team Renee Meraz - 52kg (114lb), Joly Velaquez - 63kg (138lb), and Gabby Wolf-Gonzalez – 78kg (172lb) all fought very well to each earn a silver medal.

Also competing but missing a medal were Jeremy Seidel – 66kg (145lb), Jeremy McCaslin – 81kg (178lb), Frank Cortez – 81kg (178lb), and Christopher Hurtado.

The Aggies will continue their Collegiate competition with the National Collegiate Judo Championships at Iowa State University in March.
