COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M softball team was picked preseason seventh by the Southeastern Conference coaches, and is predicted to finish second in the SEC West, the league office announced today.
No. 3 Alabama is the only division rival ahead of the Aggies in the poll. The Crimson Tide are ranked sixth in the national preseason coaches poll.
2013 SEC Tournament Champion Florida, ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll, was picked first in the SEC and leads a group of four top-5 SEC East picks –2013 national runner-up No. 2 Tennessee, No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Kentucky. Sixth-ranked Missouri also stands ahead of Texas A&M. Rounding out the poll are No. 8 LSU, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 10 Auburn, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 12 Mississippi State and No. 13 Ole Miss.
Eight of the 13 SEC softball teams appear among the nation’s top-25 in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll. Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. The 2014 SEC Softball Tournament will take place May 7-10 in Columbia, S.C., at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
The 11th-ranked Aggies (NFCA) start the 2014 season on Feb. 7 at UC Santa Barbara’s Gaucho Classic I, beginning the team’s search for a 13th-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and a berth to the Women’s College World Series.
