Avoiding the Dreaded Cold in Winter

Its beginning to be that time again: fall is approaching, the weather is getting cooler, and the sniffling sounds of people waiting to get you sick is floating through the air. But in this busy, and soon to be festive time, no one really can afford to spend days on end in bed fighting the flu. So here are some tips and tricks about the flu and how you can avoid this most sneaky bug.

Tip #1: Wash your hands.
Yes, I know, we have been told since before we can remember to wash your hands. But in this season in particular, the easiest way to avoid even the threat of sickness is to wash your hands. Example: You are going to your class that starts at 1:50. Your class has about 35 students in it. If you are even the middle person that comes into the room, you have touched a door handle that 15 other people have touched first!! But wait, this class is at 1:50, meaning that there have been 5 classes held in that room, with 35 students in it as well!! This means in just entering your classroom, you have touched a door knob that over 190 people have touched before you in just that day!! And even if you only pick up germs from 1/4 of those people, you are picking up germs from 48 people. GROSS!!

Tip #2 Get your Flu shot.
In just getting your flu shot, you are preventing even the possibility of catching the flu. Flu shots are offered in HEBs, Walgreens, CVS, and for students and staff, on Texas A&M campus. They are relatively cheap, ranging in price from $20-$30 dollars and will take only around 5 minutes to get! Why would you not take this little amount of time to possibly avoid spending hours on end feeling miserable?

Tip #3 Eat Healthy.
So eating healthy is great all around not just for your immune system. But getting the proper nutrients that your body needs helps if fight off viruses and infections. Eating foods high in fats and grease are harder for your body to digest and divert more energy toward breaking down these foods and storing all of the extra fat; energy that could be used to help your white blood cells fight off invading viruses. See the saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, is based in truth!

Tip #4 Don't share food or drinks.
Even when you don't necessarily feel sick, you can be carrying germs that can spread to other people and make them sick. Your body has a specific tolerance to certain germs that it is used to. Introducing germs from other people, whether it is from kissing or eating after them, can offset this balance of germs within your body and allow the germs to win, making you feel sick. I'm not saying don't kiss your partner or anything, but don't take any extra risks by eating after someone else or drinking after them.

Following these steps doesn't necessarily mean that you will not get sick, but it greatly reduces your chances of it. And if you do get sick following these steps, the sickness will usually not be as intense nor last as long. Good luck this season!
