Picking the perfect lip color can be daunting … and for some, downright scary. Let’s face it, the color you put (or don’t) on your lips says a lot.
In my beauty consulting days, lip color was always the part of a makeup consultation women were most hesitant of. I don’t know if I just love a good challenge or that I really love experimenting with lip colors … but it was always my favorite part of a makeover to ‘wow’ women with what some good lip color can do. It changes your look completely.
Don’t be scared of lip color.
So, there are lots of questions surrounding lip color. First, which type do you choose? There are so many! There are lipsticks, lip pencils, lip liners, lip glosses, lip stains and tinted lip balms.
Let’s just eliminate one choice to make life easier. I despise lip stains. They dry out lips and leave them cracked and it’s uncomfortable and unattractive. Just don’t buy it. Okay? Okay.
Lip pencils are great. They’re dual ended so you have the liner on one side and the color on another. I love them. They’re easy to use and they are already coordinated for you. They also last a long time which really helps because you do not have to apply it all day. No one has time for that.
Lipsticks have come a long way. There are so many colors to choose from. If you go this route, make sure to choose one with a creamy base so it doesn’t dry out your lips. If you choose a lipstick, choose a liner that is a shade or two darker. This will help your lips look fuller and keep your lipstick from bleeding.
Lip glosses are great … as long as the formula isn’t sticky. There’s nothing worse than having your hair stuck to your lips. I really like to add a gloss on top of lipstick and pencils. I love to put a gold tinted gloss on top of pinks and reds. It totally changes the look. Try it!
Tinted lip balms are great to keep in your desk drawer and purse. Especially on those days your lips are really dry. Unfortunately, I have many of those days.
If you’re going to invest in a lip color, really invest in it. I suggest going to a makeup store and trying colors on. For many women, the lip color changes after they put it on their lips. Try on a color at the store and walk around for about five minutes to see if the color changes.
Here’s one of my favorite tips. If a color doesn’t work on you, wipe it off. Your lips will probably already be slightly stained with the color. If this happens, put a small amount of your foundation on your lips and this will cancel out the color. Then, you’re free to try another!
Don’t be scared of lip colors. Invest in them and they will completely change your look. Experiment in the store and see what you like and what works best for you.
