Featured Review – Battleship

Directed by: Peter Berg

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker

2012 may be quite a regretful year for Taylor Kitsch. He provided us with a truly great TV character in Friday Night Light’s Tim Riggins. Kitsch’s portrayal captured the classic “women want him, men want to be him” dynamic that made the show one of the best TV dramas of the last decade as well as opening the door for Taylor to make the jump to movie stardom. Unfortunately, he used the opportunity to make John Carter and Battleship.

Battleship is superficial and has shallower depth than a kiddy pool. When the end credits roll, you don’t really remember what took place, you just know that there was a bunch of noise and Rihanna screaming “What the hell is that?!” It’s telling that nearly all of the special features deal with special effects or how the action of the film was created. In its defense, how else are you going to make a movie about a board game?

But if your favorite movie of all time is a three-way tie between the Transformers movies then Battleship may be right up your alley. The action is pretty mesmerizing at times, but anything involving a story does not exist.
