(Washington Times) - A Chicago high school student faces charges after reportedly spiking a container of marinara sauce with fiery hot sauce, sending three people to the hospital and prompting school officials to install security cameras in the cafeteria.
The 17-year-old Highland Park High School student will be charged as a juvenile on five counts of misdemeanor battery, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.
Three cafeteria workers were treated May 14 at a local hospital for coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and skin rashes, Township School District 113 Natalie Kaplan told the Chicago Tribune. Two students also reported symptoms but did not require hospital treatment.
Highland Park Police Deputy Chief George Pfutzenreuter said the employees didn’t even have to eat the hot sauce to develop symptoms.
“I don’t think you can find this one in the store,” he said of the Da’ Bomb hot sauce. “It sounds like this kid had to get it someplace special.”
The school district had bought a security surveillance system a few months earlier and was trying to decide on locations for the cameras, Ms. Kaplan told the Chicago Tribune.
“We decided, based upon that incident, that we’ll go ahead and install cameras in the cafeteria where the incident occurred,” she said.
The student was also disciplined by the school, Ms. Kaplan added.
