Several months ago I saw “DIY Mugs” on Pinterest. The instructions said to use a white mug and a regular Sharpie marker, draw or write on the mug, cook the mug, and you’d have an ever-lasting design on your mug. I made one of these DIY mugs for my boyfriend back then only to learn that the marker washed off, even when I hand washed the mug.
This past weekend was my birthday, though, and my boyfriend found a way to remake the mug I made him and make one for me in a way that would never wash off. Since he made these and I didn’t, I don’t have pictures of the process, but I do have photos of the completed project.
To begin, he used the mugs I had purchased at Walmart several months ago for the original project. They were about $2 a mug. He then purchased a glass-tip ceramic pen from Hobby Lobby for around $4. Those are the only materials required for this project. The pens are available in a few different colors.
To make the mugs, write or draw on the mug in whatever design you desire. Let the pen air dry for eight hours. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees. Once it is heated up, put the mugs in the oven and let them bake for 45 minutes. Make sure the opening of the mug is facing up so heat doesn’t get trapped and crack the ceramic.
After 45 minutes, turn the oven off and open the door to the oven to let the mugs cool down. This helps prevent cracking. Once the mugs are cool, the pen is permanent. They are even dishwasher safe.
While these mugs aren’t necessarily “DIY Decoration,” they are certainly DIY gifts that are very personal and sentimental. If you wanted to get more decorative, you could buy several pens in different colors and decorate ceramic plates to hang on the wall.
