Decorating with a theme in mind is an excellent way to make a room look great. Since I just moved into a new apartment last week, I had a clean slate to decorate, and I wanted my room to have a travel theme. A few weeks ago I was at World Market and I found a block letter “E” with a map print on the front. I really loved it and wanted it for my room, but when I went to buy it I found out it was part of a set of map-printed letters spelling the word “explore.” The set cost almost $80.
Since I only wanted one letter, I decided it would be pretty easy to make on my own. I purchased a block letter “E” at Hobby Lobby for $2.50. That was the only thing I had to buy for this project. My biggest problem at first was finding a map to attach to my letter. I didn’t realize it until recently, but my generation does not use maps. We use technology. But luckily I was at my parents’ house for a week and my mom still had several old Texas maps lying around and she was nice enough to give me one.
This project was really simple: all I did was lay my letter on top of my map and trace it with a sharpie, cut out the map along my sharpie lines, and ModPodge it to my block letter. I let it dry overnight and that was it. I now have a cute map-print initial letter to match the travel theme in my bedroom.
Right now, the sides of the block letter are blank. It looks fine the way it is, but it would also look cute if the sides were painted a color, or if burlap was attached. You would really do anything to make it match the décor of your room. And it doesn’t just have to be a map attached to the front either! I considered attaching some old sheet music, or you could attach your favorite poem printed on pretty paper. When you’re making your own decorations, you can do almost anything you want.
