Dating in this digital age is dangerous for so many reasons, but texting especially can possibly be the most confusing dating tool since going to speed dating. This is why I’m encouraging everyone to make a pledge to be more social face-to-face, but first why should you?
As girls, we are much braver in the comforts of our room, hiding behind our cell phones. We can carefully plan out each word, re-write, over think, and get our friends to help cautiously choose what to say. Now boys, from what I understand, don’t even think about what they’re typing back. This is equally as dangerous, because now we have all your mistakes in writing. I promise girls will look back and see exactly what you said, then try to break down what each word means. People may or may not be who they seem behind a phone. You honestly don’t know if it’s her/him talking or if it’s their dating-savvy friend. You don’t even know if they think before they text or just quickly respond.
Disclaimer: I know this is not true for everyone, but as a constant people observer and experienced texter this is what I have noticed.
Another downside is there’s no way to tell a tone of a text. I’ve had much confusion based off not being able to tell if someone was pissed or joking. Yes maybe a “lol,” or “jk” can kind of help, nope I take that back, it doesn’t at all. The point is, this just leads to more confusion, which then leads to more stress.
And the greatest burden by far is when to stop texting. There are two types of people in the texting world. The ones who talk all day and the ones who use texting as a way to simply communicate. When these types come together it’s mass confusion. Then the ones who like to text all the time constantly bug the innocent friends, nagging them, “Do you think he’s just busy? or maybe he’s just not into it? WHAT IS IT?!” Okay, you want to know what it is? Some people are busy. The end. Please excuse my rant.
I do want to clarify just because texting can add some problems, doesn’t mean I’m advising giving up on it completely. All I’m saying is don’t take it too seriously and don’t use it as the basis for a relationship.
Did I convince you to take the pledge?
Here it is, I _________ promise to make an effort to use in person communication.
