Do We Need to be FBO?

In order to have a solid relationship today, it seems that a major requirement is that you need to be FBO. That’s right, facebook official. What makes a FBO relationship better than a non-FBO relationship? Absolutely nothing. Posting pictures and tagging every single moment you both share is anything, but cute. In fact, it’s annoying. Very annoying.

A FBO relationship is a sham. If you’re having to prove that your relationship is so great online, then you’re lying to yourself (don’t mean to sound brutal, but just telling it like it is.) “Let’s go to the movies, so I can post on Facebook what a great time we had!” See how horrible that statement sounds?

True but pathetic story: A friend of mine finally got into her first major relationship, but there were two problems. Problem one was that her boyfriend didn’t have a Facebook. Since he did not have a Facebook account it led into to problem number two: you can’t be FBO without both parties having a Facebook. How on earth was their relationship going to work?! Well she came up with the answer and offered him an ultimatum. He could sign up for an account and become FBO to prove his dying affection for her or he could kiss their future good-bye. Now, I love my friend dearly, but if I was him, I would have saw that as a golden opportunity to get out before it was too late. I guess it was his first major relationship as well, because he made that account and became FBO with her. About a month later, they called it quits. They came to a mutual agreement saying that the relationship was too demanding. Yeah, I think we all saw that coming. . .

A viral relationship makes me think of a bad infection that needs to be cured. So if you’re trying to get in a relationship and the first move you make is updating your Facebook status, then you might need to reconsider dating anyone at all. Don’t make the mistake my friend did and wind up having to update your status back to single. Usually what I’ve noticed about Facebook statuses is that people ignore it when TMI is posted, but are quick to find out what happened when they see the relationship is over.

Instead, let’s focus on spending more time with each other and leave Facebook as well as the internet in general out of it.
