Eliot Spitzer Wants Hillary Clinton, Not Andrew Cuomo, To Run For President in 2016

Here's the full version of my story that ran today on Eliot Spitzer's return to Albany yesterday:

Eliot Spitzer dismissed a 2016 White House run by Gov. Cuomo-- saying he hopes Hillary Clinton runs instead.

In his first appearance in Albany since resigning in disgrace in 2008 in a prostitution scandal, Spitzer declined to talk about Cuomo’s possible campaign.

“I think Hillary should run and if she does, I honestly can’t imagine there would even be a primary,” Spitzer said at a WAMC public radio fund-raiser.

Clinton has said she has no interest in running for President again, though many think she’ll reconsider. Cuomo has downplayed talk of his presidential ambition, saying he is focused on his job as governor.

There’s another possible explanation for Spitzer’s assessment: Cuomo, as state attorney general, probed Spitzer and his administration for using the state police to tar then-Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno, his chief political foe.

“I’m learning,” he joked when asked about his diplomatic answers regarding Cuomo’s performance. “I don’t think it’s my place to rate people.”

Spitzer didn't get too sentimental returning to a city where he was praised for his eight years as attorney general and vilified during his tumultuous less than two-year run as governor.

He said the appeal of public service remains, though he doesn’t wake up thinking about it.

“I obviously care deeply about government and cherish the years that I had,” he told reporters afterward. “ I have found memories of that stretch of time (and) obviously regret that it didn’t continue, but life goes on.”

Spitzer also admitted that he thinks about returning to politics: “I have fond memories of that stretch of time (and) obviously regret that it didn’t continue. But life goes on.”
