Express Yourself with Canvases

As I’ve mentioned before, I moved into a new apartment this year, and while I’ve spent a good amount of time decorating my bedroom, the living room has been a bit neglected. In a previous post I talked about how I bought pillows and curtains for the living room and it spruced it up quite a bit, but the wall over the sofa was a blank white boring disappointment.

My roommates and I have been talking about painting something to put up there since we moved in, but we could never agree on exactly what to do. It remained blank and boring. Then, partly as a joke, one of my roommates hung my poster of the actor Joaquin Phoenix over the sofa and taped a Hulk Hogan-esque mustache to it. When people came into my apartment and saw that ridiculous display right above the sofa, it really got me wanting to get my act together and put something nice up there.

So last weekend, all three of my roommates and I got together and decided we were going to paint individual canvases and hang them together in an arrangement. This was a good way to decorate the apartment while displaying a little bit of each of our personalities. It also gives us something to bring with us when we move on to different points in our lives.

Of course we decided to get down to business and start painting on a Sunday, so Hobby Lobby was closed. But I ventured out of my comfort zone and went to Michael’s, and it was a very serendipitous voyage. The canvases we wanted were “buy one get one for $0.01.” So we basically all got a half price canvas. We also bought several different colors of acrylic paint, which were less than a dollar a bottle, and one of my roommates really wanted glitter. She found a pack of five different glitter types for $1.25.

That day it was actually cold outside, so we laid newspaper over the entire living room and painted inside the apartment.

Then we each just had at it and painted our canvases however we want. One of my roommates is an entomology major and painted a very good image of a bumble bee on her canvas. I splatter painted my canvas (which is the one all the way to the right in the picture), and I intend to go back soon and add the words “C’est la vie” over top of the paint, but I wanted to make sure it was completely dry before I did that.

This project was super fun because I got to do it with all of my roommates. It was super fun and good for bonding, and now our living room looks a lot better and still has a piece of all of us in the decoration.
