Considering that I didn’t sacrifice myself to Black Friday and get some awesome deals, I’m stuck with the scary thought of getting my friends and family Christmas gifts on a tight budget. As a student, I spend majority of my money on food, fun and school supplies…of course. This leaves minimal discretionary money for gifts.
As the holidays get closer and closer, I am frantically looking for the best deals and ideas for gifts. Since I am an Aggie, every gift I give will be A&M related whether they like it or not. Maybe it could be a stuffed Reveille or even maroon pajamas.
There are a few things that can help your bank account survive this holiday season. Number one thing is to make your own gifts. I know everyone hears this all the time, but it’s so true and much more meaningful to the receiver.
My personal favorite is to put anything edible in a mason jar. You could even do non-edible things! Throw a maroon ribbon and an A&M logo on it and you are good to go. I have done the go-to hot cocoa mix before, but you can do cookie mix, hand scrub or a drink mixture. The other fun part of the mason jar gift is that you can personalize it. Add a funny quote or picture and then each person will feel individually special.
Another favorite is the Christmas tree gift. It sounds confusing but it’s pretty simple and a lot of fun to give. All you need to do is buy a little Christmas tree from the dollar store, make sure it’s bare, and attach their favorite treats or money to the tree with glue or tape. Now to make this an Aggie tree, again just put some A&M paraphernalia on it and there you have it. This could potentially cost you under $10. The receiver of your gift will be so awestruck by your creative talents that they won’t even notice that you spent minimal money.
Lastly, my absolute favorite hand-made gift is the IOU booklets. You can go any direction with these! For friends, you can make little certificates that say “I’m not driving tonight” or “one free dish washing”. You can take this the comical or meaningful route. For parents, always go meaningful with “free compliments” or “no complaining for an hour”. These are always fun and there’s no doubt the receiver will appreciate them.
If you’re not looking into making something or you’re not the creative type, consider visiting local A&M stores. A simple Aggie ornament or t-shirt is always cheap and simple. Even a picture frame with a photo already in it is always heart-warming. These are the perfect items for an Aggie fan. And if they’re not a fan, that’s even better.
If all else fails, buy them a fleece blanket. No one can ever have enough fleece blankets.
