Four-way split today for National Whatever Day: National Grits Day, International Moment of Laughter Day, Look Up at the Sky Day, and National Pecan Day.
National Grits Day
Because we live in Texas, most people are familiar with grits. Grits are commonly made of alkali-treated corn known as hominy, even though they look like potatoes a little bit, and they are mainly eaten for breakfast. The texture of grits is not always my favorite but my grandma's grits are the best anywhere, and I'm sure you'd argue your grandma's grits are pretty great as well. A little butter, a little cheese... mmm-mmm-mmm! Enjoy some grits today for National Grits Day!
International Moment of Laughter Day
Everyone knows what laughing is, but did you know laughing could actually be healthy for your body? According to a researcher on WebMD, "People who believe in the benefits of laughter say it can be like a mild workout -- and may offer some of the same advantages as a workout.
'The effects of laughter and exercise are very similar,' says Wilson. 'Combining laughter and movement, like waving your arms, is a great way to boost your heart rate.' One pioneer in laughter research, William Fry, claimed it took ten minutes on a rowing machine for his heart rate to reach the level it would after just one minute of hearty laughter.
And laughter appears to burn calories, too. Maciej Buchowski, a researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study in which he measured the amount of calories expended in laughing. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories." So do yourself a favor and laugh today, it makes you feel good and it burns calories!
Look Up at the Sky Day
Looking up at the sky this morning may prove to be a little difficult with the thunderstorms passing through, but you could go catch more than a few raindrops on your tongue. If the storms blow through by mid-afternoon, look up at the sky and see what you see!
National Pecan Day
Pecans... some say it like PEE-CANS, while others say PECK-AWNS. I personally say it both because my grandpa says the first and my mother says the latter. Either way, grandma's aren't just good at making grits, but they make excellent pecan pies. If you haven't had one and live in Texas, you haven't lived. Get you some pecan pie today for National Pecan Day!
