Featured Review: The Five-Year Engagement

Directed by: Nicholas Stoller

Starring: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie

Last week, a focus was put on the questionable movie choices of one Taylor Kitsch. The opportunities he gained from his memorable stint as Tim Riggins were wasted on the likes of Battleship and John Carter. Perhaps Kitsch could learn a thing or two from Jason Segel, the star of the latest DVD release, The Five Year Engagement.

Segel, like Kitsch, got his start in television with the Judd Apatow created shows Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. While the roles didn't directly lead to opportunities on the big screen, the shows displayed the awkwardness, oddball and honest realism that Segel does so well with his characters. Eventually through other supporting roles in Apatow-related films, he had his breakthrough with Forgetting Sarah Marshal, which he starred in as well as wrote the script. Since then, Segel has proven that he not only belongs on the big screen but he can make any story better through his performance.

Five-Year Engagement drags out a little bit and does not quite strike the same magic like Marshal. But Jason Segel and Emily Blunt keep us watching every minute with their effortless chemistry. The story's flaws are forgiven and glossed over by the genuine fun the two seem to have. Battleship showed that Kitsch's future on the big screen may be in question. Five-Year Engagement showed that Jason Segel is here to stay for a long time.

Piranha 3DD

Directed by: John Gulager

Starring: Daniell Panabaker, Matt Bush

Surely when Piranha 3D ended, everyone in the theater shouted, “Encore! Encore!” Well those wishes have been fulfilled. Piranha 3DD attempts to up the gore and raunchiness that made its predecessor a cult sensation. The plot is simple—A whole bunch of piranhas start munching on some folks.
