Did you know that there is a Rock-and-roll version of The Phantom of the Opera? No?
Well did you also know that there is a country-western version?
This past Friday, I excitedly attended the premiere of Neil Burg’s The Phantoms of the Opera in Rudder Theater. The Phantoms of the Opera is something of a ‘concert on steroids’ that celebrates the many diverse theatrical productions that have shared the name, The Phantom of the Opera. Aside from the many different versions of the play that are remembered in this performance, the most unique aspect of this production can be found in how the cast is put together. The cast is made up of seven Broadway actors, six local performers (many of whom are Texas A&M graduates) and a 100-member chorus chosen from the Texas A&M choral department. The result was a powerful singing combination.
Neil Berg said, “In our earliest discussions about this project, Anne (Black) and I agreed that we wanted to include local actors, musicians and a huge chorus from Texas A&M. As ‘Phantoms’ started taking shape, we identified parts that would work for local actors. We were very pleased with the level of talent that auditioned for us. We had hard decisions to make.” Berg preformed on the piano with an eight-piece band and spoke in between musical selections, narrating the story. He was the perfect guide for a tour on which the audience experiences the most popular songs and the forgotten stories behind all the incredible musicals and films inspired by Gaston Leroux’s, The Phantom of the Opera.
If you ever get the chance to see this fantastic concert, do it!
