Get ready Aggieland, the Texas A&M quidditch team is competing in the Quidditch World Cup in Kissimmee, Florida this weekend! Eighty of the best teams in the world will all compete for the championship title.

Quidditch was brought to our attention through the well-known Harry Potter novels. Xander Manshel, a freshman at the time at Middlebury College in Vermont, decided one day he wanted something different for him and his friends to do and decided to put together a quidditch game. It was an instant hit on campus! In 2007, the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association was founded by Alex Benepe, after the first intercollegiate match between Middlebury and Vassar College. The quidditch craze only got bigger as colleges and high schools across the country joined in on their love of the game.

This year the Texas A&M quidditch team will be attending the World Cup and they are doing everything they can to get ready for it. The team has also been practicing three times a week and the drills and conditioning are getting more intense as the date approaches.

Drew Wasikowski, one of the team’s players and coaches, said, “We’ll be training harder than ever, both in and out of practice. We're also reviewing game footage and our overall performance at Regionals in order to fill any gaps in the skill of the team and individual players."

Texas A&M lives off of tradition and the Texas A&M quidditch team has some awesome traditions of their own! Before each game the team forms a circle with their arms around each other and one person in the middle. From there the person in the middle leads the team in a yell and the team ends with the shout “beat the hell outta Middlebury.” You may wonder why they say this for every game well Wasikowski said, “A&M lost to Middlebury in the semifinals of the last World Cup, and even though that team is no longer a strong competitor we use them as fuel for the passion and drive we harness into every match."

Best of luck to the Texas A&M quidditch team and from one Aggie to another, BTHO Middlebury!
