One of the biggest expenses when living on your own would have to be utilities. Electricity and your water bill can add up pretty fast, and it can be a huge inconvenience at the end of the month. My roommates and I don’t turn on the heater at all when it is cold, and only turn the air conditioning on at night during the summer. It can be brutal, however, we will do anything to keep our bills low. You don’t have to be so extreme when it comes to saving money. Here are some easy tips to save on utilities that everyone should try.
1. Turn the light & fans off
This seems like a “duh” thing, but turn the lights and fan off when you’re not using them. Open the shutters or a window instead.
2. Don’t watch TV
I have so many friends who have gotten rid of their cable in general and love it. They still can watch their shows online on websites like hulu.com, and they save about $50-$100 per month.
3. Hand Wash Dishes
Instead of running dishes through the dishwasher, hand-wash them. You will use less water, and you save by hand drying them with a towel.
4. At night, shut down your computer, cell phone, lights, TV, etc.
Like before, if you’re not using it, shut it down, and don’t just log off. You would be surprised how much energy your stuff sucks up. Turn off your DVD player or gaming system. Even keeping your phone charger in the wall without being connected to your phone eats energy.
5. Don’t run Christmas lights during the day
For those of you who are already getting into the Christmas spirit, keep your Christmas lights turned off during the day. No one can even see them during the day.
6. Keep dryer lint trap clean
Change this out one or two times every two weeks. It will also keep your clothes cleaner.
7. Do full, consecutive load of laundry
Do not do laundry unless you have full loads. On top of that, do consecutive loads. The dryer will have already been heated up from the previous cycle, and will use less energy.
With it getting colder outside, utilities are already looking better, but these tips can be super helpful during the bad summer months. Start practicing energy efficient behaviors now so that they become habit, and be less anxious the next time you pay your rent.
