Texas A&M is one of the very few schools in this wonderful state of Texas that has school today. I have to say, this may be the ONLY thing that ruffles my feathers about my university.
According to the United States Department of Labor, Labor Day is “a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country”.
If you’re like me, I hope you’re wondering, “Why the heck are we not getting the day off?”
I know it’s only one day, but in my eyes this is one more day that I have to stress over school. Considering we just started…I believe we deserve this one day because syllabus week may be the hardest week of school.
Once I heard about the unfortunate news that we had school, I immediately thought “why?” So I asked around and got one answer that might have made my day: “farmers didn’t get labor day off”.
Of course, this may not be the real reason considering there are other aspects involved: Universities are only given so many holidays and we get a longer winter break. So this all makes sense on paper, but I think I liked the other answer better.
After hearing this simple response, it became all clear to me. I was groaning about not getting a few extra hours of sleep while A&M was staying true to its roots.
Yes, A&M might not give us the day off but we have to appreciate their reasoning. Our campus is all about tradition and it’s the main reason why I love this school. A&M was built upon a spirit that no other campus has or understands. This may the reason why all my friends from other schools laugh when I say I have class, but my Aggie friends do not.
So today at school, embrace your classes (don’t skip because you think you have an excuse). Tell all your non-Aggies that today might have been the best day of classes you attended…ever! Take my advice and partake in some of my favorite labor day/school day celebrations!
1) Cool off. College Station has a surplus of pools so enjoy them! If you live in an apartment with one, you’re that much closer. If you don’t, you can always call a friend who does or buy a plastic one from Wal-Mart (that’s always an adventure).
2) Cook out. Labor day is all about relaxing from all your hard work so grab some friends and show off your awesome grilling skills. Grocery stores started running Labor Day sales on Friday and continue through today so you’re in luck!
3) Relax. If none of the above excites you, then do what you’re supposed to do on Labor Day…relax. Make sure you get all you’re duties done early so you can lounge around later.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day!
