I am back this week with Harlan Coben’s second book in the Mickey Bolitar series, Seconds Away. It feels like I have been waiting forever for this book to be released! It could have something to do with the fact that I finished the first book on the day that it was released…yes I know I am a nerd, but I am proud of it! Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much free time as I did with the first book. I am busy with school and work so I wasn’t able to finish the second book in a day, but it was pretty darn close and let me just say it now: this book was unbelievable!
Seconds Away literally picks up right where Shelter, the first book in the series, left off. I was a little surprised by this tactic because I feel most books jump forward a little bit and then fill us in on what happened, but I was not in the least disappointed. Like I said in my review of the first book I was left with the hairs on the back of my neck standing up over what information was just revealed so I was more than happy to get right to the point and find out what was all going on.
In this second book the audience will find Mickey in the middle of so many mysteries once again. Mickey is trying to figure out what his purpose is with the Abeona Shelter, all the details on the mysterious death of his father and most recently who was behind the shooting of his friend Rachel; a little overwhelming to say the least. With the help of his quirky yet loyal new friends, Spoon and Ema, they will stop at nothing and I mean nothing to figure out what is going on. Mickey is determined as always to protect everyone he cares about even if danger is just “seconds away.”
Let me just say that Mickey Bolitar is one of my favorite characters ever. Coben you did a great job creating this character. He has such a good heart and wants nothing but the best for the people he cares about. Yet I find myself loving the fact that he could be one of the most sarcastic characters ever; I long for the days that I could be as quick-witted as him.
I don’t know how Coben does it, but this book is even more intense than the first one. The amount of different plots Coben comes up with is mind-blowing. There are so many different twists and turns happening, but yet in the back of your mind you know that somehow they will all tie in together and reveal something earth shattering. I would honestly find myself zoning out during class because I was trying to figure out everything that is going on, thank you Mr. Coben. After finishing the first book I had so many questions I wanted answered and the second book does clear some things up for me, but I feel like for every question answered twice as many new ones appeared.
I could go on for hours about how amazing of an author Harlan Coben is, but I will try to contain myself. Let me just put it this way if you are a mystery reader or even someone that is just slightly interested in mystery books do yourself a favor and go start this series! I can assure you that you will not be disappointed in these books; they will leave you on the edge of your seat and wanting more.
