Save by Selling Old Items

Needing to get rid of some of your old belongings? Well last week Plato’s Closet was touched on a bit. However, I have to say don’t just limit yourself to just there!

Consignment shops are great too. What you would do at a consignment shop is bring in all the clothes, accessories, and toys that you were planning on taking. Each consignment shop is different so call in advance to see what items they take and how they want you to bring it in. After you wait a few weeks, stop by again to see if any of your items sold. Usually consignment shops will take a large percentage (often 60-80%) of the price they sold it for, but always ask ahead of time so you’ll know up front what’s going to happen.

Another option is to have a winter yard sell. People will literally buy any and everything out of your house! I had my first yard sell a few years back and one of the buyers had told me that I could be selling way more items that what I had on display. She ended up looking inside of my house and telling me that people would pay for house decorations, silverware, costumes, and other things I considered junk.

My last option to give to you is to use Craigslist to sell your items. Yes, Craigslist can seem pretty sketchy, but I’ve had great success selling plenty of things on there. Just keep it local and tell people what you’re doing if you plan on going through with it. It’s free and your ad can stay on there for a very long time. Take a picture of what you plan on giving away and just list your price. I like to start the listing off high and then negotiate prices with people that are interested.

Basically just remember the saying, “One man’s junk, is another man’s treasure.” I’ve made more than $200 doing all three of these things. It takes time, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.
