A Sentimental Craft

One of my favorite ways to decorate is with photographs. Maybe I’m sentimental, but I love the feeling of being surrounded by family and friends every time I’m home. This week’s DIY project is one I actually did a few years ago that I’ve brought with me to all the four places I’ve called “home” in the last three years.

It started with a plain wooden and cork picture frame I purchased at Michael’s. Since it was several years ago, I don’t remember the exact price. But I do remember that it was cheap. I also bought some paint (less than $1.00 a bottle), some flat thumbtacks (can be purchased in never-ending packs at Wal-Mart for very cheap), and some pretty decorative buttons (the most expensive part of this – about $5 -$8 at Michael’s for a container of buttons).

First, I taped off the cork part of the frame, and then I painted the outer wooden rim pink, and the inner wooden rim purple. Just that small addition really made the frame look a lot better, but I wasn’t finished there. I hot glued some of the prettier buttons onto the flat head of the thumbtacks and tacked them into the cork as decoration. That was all it took to make an adorable picture frame.

My favorite part about this frame is that it’s changeable. In my dorm and now in my apartment, the main color of my bedroom has been purple. But if ever I decide to change up my room and make it blue or green or anything, I can just take out the thumbtacks, glue different buttons to different thumbtacks, and have a completely different picture frame.
