Slighty Stoopid Drops New Album, Top of the World

You don’t have to be a stoner to be moderately appreciative about today’s gift to reggae lovers. Slightly Stoopid represents the cream of the Cali-rock/skatepunk/acoustic/slightly jam-band crop… Okay, so they seem to occupy their own scene. I see this as a positive because I can pick and choose from the different sounds they’re experimenting with. I’ll admit some off their stuff just isn’t for me but a handful of my all-time favorites belong to these fellows.

Be forewarned, these guys sing about pot as much as any rapper on the radio but I appreciate their refraining from all the androcentric vulgarities. BUT, I firmly believe you don’t have to agree with their lifestyle to enjoy the jams they pump out. Something about their music is easygoing and comforting (Big surprise, right?). But seriously, Slightly Stoopid is – at the very least – a band to be familiar with. While the group hasn’t had record-breaking sales of any of their albums, they have done quite well for themselves and dominate their niche. They did make the Billboard Top 200 with their album Closer to the Sun – which most consider to be a substantial accomplishment for any musician. If that doesn’t impress you, maybe this little tidbit will legitimize Slightly Stoopid to any skeptics out there – the founders of the band, Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were signed by Sublime’s leading man, Brad Nowell, while they were still in high school. Prodigies? Perhaps.

If you want to get a feel of the vibes these dudes are sending out, listen to a few of my favorites: “Wiseman,” “This Joint,” “Collie Man” and “Closer to the Sun.” Don’t judge their entire discography by these jams, however. I lean towards liking the reggae stuff but Slightly Stoopid has an exceptionally eclectic collection of sounds.

To come full circle, the band’s new album, Top of the World, drops today. I can’t make any promises as to the consistency with which Slightly Stoopid sticks to their former quality but I do know one thing – I’m going to give it a listen.
