The Big Event

This past Saturday, over 19,000 Aggies joined together to give back to the Bryan-College Station community. This is the one day that students can show their appreciation to the public through acts of service as an Aggie family.

Students from all across campus participated in this amazing event. Athletes, members of the Greek community, Fish Camps, and student organizations all shared one thing during Big Event: selfless service.

It all started 31 years ago with six Aggies who had a passion for giving back. The seed they planted in 1982 has grown to be the largest student-operated service project in the country.

This year was a tremendous success. Groups of students were sent out to complete projects including: cutting down trees, cleaning up trash, painting houses, and other household chores. Although Big Event participants are giving back to the community, these students gain so much more. They develop friendships and responsibility through hard work.

The Big Event team also took another aspect of involvement. They asked those who participated to keep everyone updated with their progress through social media. Tweets, photos, and Facebook posts were splashed across everyone’s newsfeed. Anyone within a 50-mile radius of Bryan-College Station knew that Big Event was happening and how great it was.

Big Event brings the community and the students of Texas A&M together. Students have the opportunity to network and develop relationships with locals. It is a win-win situation for everyone.
Big Event has only become better and more successful each year. I have no doubt that it will only become greater with the years to come. To all those who participated and the ones who organized an amazing Big Event, thank you!
