The End of the Year Check List

It beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, and 2012 is coming to a close. I know everyone is getting excited for the holidays, but one of the things I look forward to is getting organized for the New Year. I am a complete believer than being organized improves efficiency, kick-starts productivity, and will help anyone get on track whether it’s a certain goal, getting in shape, or saving money.

One of the things I do at the end of each year is good through my clothes. I look for the things I have never worn, are to big/small, or are just plain old. The first thing I do is take them to Plato’s Closet to see if I can get any cash back for the. It’s usually not much, but it’s better than nothing. For everything else, I make sure I donate the clothes. It’s easier to donate over the holidays because it’s a giving season. Search for a clothes drop-off box in your community, or call the Salvation Army to pick stuff up at your house.

Another important task I always do after a semester is sell my books. Through my experience, the earlier you sell them, the better you are off. Put the books on eBay or sell them back to the bookstores. You could get an extra $100 for buying Christmas gifts.

Another thing that I start doing at the end of the year is getting my money situated. Because I am a waitress and get most of my money in cash rather than a check every other week, I think it is more important for me to track how much money I make. I usually update the list every semester, and it is just to see how much I earned. Then, I look back at my debit card records online and calculate how much I spent on food, rent, gas, etc. I started doing this a couple of year’s ago, and it really was an eye-opening experience. Most people don’t realize how much they spend over a month or semester. It can be a real shock to some. This is also important because everyone is getting ready to do his or her taxes, and is nice to be organized ahead of time.

I love getting ready for the New Year. Out with the old, and in with the new! It is also a great idea, because you will need extra room for all your new gifts from the holidays. Take it from me; staying organized helps save time, money, and stress. Work on it now when you have some time off, and get ready for 2013!!!
