The Infamous Gangnam Style

I have been captivated by a song with such gravity and pulled in such a way that I am powerless to write about anything but my captivator. Of course, I am referring to “Gangnam Style” by South Korea’s PSY. I was introduced to this song and the accompanying music video just yesterday. I can count the lyrics I can understand on one hand. This handful of lyrics makes no sense still. I cannot get this infectious dance anthem out of my head. At least I can find solace in the fact that most nearly everyone has been hit by this epidemic. “Gangnam Style” is the number 1 Top Single on the iTunes homepage. The official music video has 194,665,000 views on YouTube as I write this very sentence… It just came out of nowhere.

I’m not going to write about PSY or his accomplishments in the music industry because, honestly, I don’t care. I just care about “Gangnam Style” and what in our chemistry makes it so irresistible. The lyrics – to your average American – are pure gibberish. The music video – to what I’ll assume is everyone – is a provocative, gaudy, and very “pop” composition and just outright silly to be frank. PSY’s carries himself in a way that bears striking resemblance to Ken Jeong’s character from The Hangover, Mr. Chow. He exudes arrogance – this man does has not a care in the world about what anybody thinks because he is doing it, and doing it BIG. Or at least that’s what I’ve taken away from the music video. Everyone will be dancing the “Gangnam Style” jig this weekend at Northgate… It’s delightfully Texan.

I’m not quite sure if it’s apparent but I’m somewhat dumbstruck by this whole ordeal. I had a purpose with this blog… but I’ve been watching the “Gangnam Style” music video on repeat through the entire writing process and quite frankly, I’m growing weary of splitting my attention. I’m even feeling a little guilty. So I’ll have to end this here. I have my priorities straight – back to “Gangnam Style” on repeat!

Have yourself a personal party and just watch the video with a friend or two. Practice the dance for this weekend. I’d hate to be wrong about Northgate.
