Good news: It’s a much better week for movies this week. There’s something for the whole family dropping on DVD and Blu-Ray today, so you should find something you like no matter your interests.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted with Marty’s Rainbow Wig
If you enjoyed the first two Madagascar movies, you’re sure to like the third just a much. This movie is fun the whole way through. After all, it takes place in a circus. One bit of bad news, however: The rainbow wig isn’t designed for adult heads. If you’re buying a DVD just for the toys, consider last week’s plush E.T. with the 30th Anniversary Box Set.
I’ll admit that I didn’t see this one in theaters, but I plan on picking it up at the Redbox one day this week. From what I’ve heard, it’s a true-to-form Wes Anderson movie. One that, through all the zany antics, leaves you reminiscent of a simpler time. Moonrise Kingdom stars both Ed Norton and Bruce Willis and is definitely worth checking out if you’ve previously been a fan of Wes Anderson’s work.
Chernobyl Diaries and Excision
These two movies are related only in that they’re both crazy, gory thrill rides that are ideal for the weeks leading up to Halloween. Chernobyl Diaries is a schlock-laden 86 minutes of contemporary slasher fun. It’s not that far removed from Friday the 13th in its overall premise (six young, attractive people are someone where they shouldn’t be), but it definitely has some of the flair its writer, Oren Peli, brought to Paranormal Activity.
Meanwhile, if Orphan made you swear never to adopt, the much-gorier and much sex-heavier Excision will make you swear off ever breeding. This movie is not for the faint of heart. There’s no two ways around that. It’s closer to a grindhouse flick than anything you’d catch in theatres. That said, it’s a definite work of art and wholly different from anything else out there. It also features a stellar cast including Annalynne McCord, Malcolm McDowell, John Waters, Matthew Gray Gubler, Marlee Matlin and Traci Lords. If you’re a fan of gory, crazy thrill rides, Excision is for you.
That’s My Boy
Just don’t. Please, don’t.
