Right now in Bryan/College Station, we are going through an awkward transition stage. Everyone is caught between the hellacious Texas heat and the cool welcoming of fall. This seems to happen every year. The students are all snuggled up in their coats in the morning and then come one or 2 o’clock in the afternoon, they’re blasting the air conditioner searching for some relief from the heat. As for me, I am completely embracing the little bit of cold weather. Any chance I get, I throw my jacket on and eat something, anything, that’s pumpkin flavored.
With fall slowly creeping up on us, it’s a great time to start joining in on the festivities. One of my favorite things to do that gets you out of the hustle and bustle of College Station is First Friday in Downtown Bryan. This is an event held on the first Friday of every month. I know, who would have thought that? They have a local farmer’s market, artist, bands, drink specials and food galore.
But wait, there’s more! This upcoming First Friday is Nov. 2 and has a little more to offer than normal. An A&M movement called Farmers Fight is going to be sponsoring the event and it’s called Artist Harvest. There will be local artists painting, food and drinks, and students talking about sustainable agriculture. With the farmer’s market right next door, this makes for a perfect Friday night!
I have a little side note. In April, Farmers Fight had another event on campus where over 20 student organization set up booths around campus to talk to students about their particular tie to agriculture. It was so successful, that they’re spreading it to other campuses! Check out my picture with a baby chick at the event, pretty cute.
Anyways, Downtown Bryan is full of hidden treasures that sometimes we forget about. First Friday gives you a little feeling of home. You can grab a cup of coffee, listen to music, and purchase local farmer’s food (which is cheaper too)!
Come out to support some of your local Aggies and get in the mood for fall, because whether you like it or not, it’s coming!
