Prettiest Girl on Campus: Reveille the VIII

Recently, I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with the famous Reveille the VIII. This dog has one of the most interesting stories in the entire SEC.

Our mascot’s story starts all the way back in January of 1931. A few Corp of Cadets members found a small black and white dog. They had a brilliant idea to hide her in their dorm room, which was against school rules. The next morning when reveille rang, the dog barked and A&M’s mascot was officially named.

Reveille is considered the prettiest, smartest, and coolest girl on campus. Here are a few reasons why:

· She has her own security…the Corp
· She attends classes with the mascot corporal
· She is a five-star general so she has the highest rank at Texas A&M
· If she decides to sleep on your bed, you sleep on the floor

Reveille has a special place in every Aggie’s heart…especially mine. One of my favorite traditions at A&M is Reveille’s presence on campus. If she attends one of your classes and barks, the class is dismissed. The reason is if you can’t entertain Reveille then you can’t entertain anyone. Every Aggie’s dream is to have her bark during a lecture.

Last semester, I was thrilled to see Reveille sitting a few rows in front of me. On one particular day, my professor was telling a story about a cow. As he started impersonating a cow walking by, Reveille shot up and started barking. The professor was shocked and said, “well, see ya next time!”

I will remember this moment for the rest of my life and will probably tell my children, who WILL be attending Texas A&M.

Reveille is so much more than just a mascot. What sets her apart from other mascots is her interaction with the students. When I talked to Daylon Koster, Reveille’s handler, he exaggerated the fact that she is constantly on campus, sleeps in the dorms, and goes to class. No other mascot is that incorporated into their school.

Reveille is no simple dog, she is a living tradition representing Texas A&M.
