After "dating" or "talking" to someone you'll eventually be ready for a more serious exclusive relationship, that's when the "what are we" conversation comes into play. Yep, DTR or define the relationship, let's be honest this can make or break your future with this person.

The main idea behind this is to communicate what you're feeling to your partner in a smooth manner without being overbearing.

The most common mistakes people make when trying to DTR (define the relationship) are:

1. Putting pressure on the other person
2. Playing games

These mistakes lead to an easy out for the person being pressured or played because you're not being fair to them. Seriousness freaks many guys and girls out and therefore the idea of becoming exclusive needs to be eased into and reciprocated by both parties within the dating relationship.

Now, try to successfully DTR:

The best way to bring up this conversation is to simply ask, "Are you dating other people as well? I am just curious where we stand in that regard so I know we're on the same page." A question and comment like this is a relaxed way of getting your point across while also letting him or her know that if you don't want to be my boyfriend/girlfriend then I can gladly get back on the market. Sometimes people need a little wake up call that reminds them not to take the person they're getting to know and dating for granted.

If they don't react well to the conversation then just slow down until you're both ready or move on to someone who can keep up with you better!
