Artistic Color Inspiration

Deciding on a theme for a room in your home can be tough, but choosing one decorative element to work from can simplify your choices. Try picking a photograph or painting from your favorite artist to create a visually appealing color scheme. You can place the artwork on your wall and highlight its colors with your surrounding furniture or decorative pieces, or the artwork can simply serve as a starting point for your ideas. Here are ways to take inspiration from two works by Matisse, a French artist who was known for his interesting use of color.

Nezy and Lydia (1941)

Take a literal approach by employing green and white as background colors and highlighting with bright red and yellow accents; or use a muted version of one color (such as olive green), and let the others stand out.

Two Girls in Coral Interior (1947)

Use multiple shades of blue, with coral and white as constants, and mix bold patterns; or tone down the color palette with light blue and soft tangerine in subtle patterns.

Taking decorative inspiration from a specific work of art can make the process of choosing colors much easier, as well as creating a one-of-a-kind space!
