I’m moving into a new apartment this week, and it opened my eyes to a problem that I’m sure many people have: it has a small footprint. Everything in my bedroom fits perfectly, and it doesn’t leave a lot of room for anything else. Unfortunately, I have tons of books and I need bookshelves, but the only way to go is up. So I was looking at different stores to find the perfect hanging bookshelves, but they were all too big, or the wrong color, or imperfect in some other way.
Then I went home to my parents’ house for a weekend and noticed an old shelf that had been hanging on my wall for years. I had completely forgotten about it because of how old and run down it was. I decided to try to fix it up and make it new again.
· Shelf (old, new, run down, anything)
· Spray paint in the color of your choice (two cans to be safe)
· Cabinet knobs (if necessary)
The first problem I ran into was that two of the original three hooks on it were missing. I couldn’t leave it with just one ugly hook, so I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased three cabinet knobs. The good part about this is that I was able to purchase cute knobs that matched my existing décor. While I was at Hobby Lobby, I bought spray paint to give it a color update.
Spray painting it was easy until I ran out of spray paint before I finished painting it, so I would advise buying two cans of the same color, just in case. If you end up using only one, you’ll have the extra can to update another piece of furniture to match your new shelf.
Attaching the knobs was not as easy, and actually required me to enlist the help of my handy-man dad. The length of the screw was too long, and he had to use a screw cutter to cut it to fit. But once they were the right size, it was easy to just screw them in to the shelf, and it added a whole new look to it.
This project just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a ton of money buying a brand new shelf for your room. Old shelves from garage sales, antique stores, or your old childhood bedroom can become new with a simple coat of paint and some pretty hardware. If you have a small room and don’t have enough floor space to add some furniture, try hanging your things on the wall to get them out of the way.
