On February 12, 2013 approximately 2,800 local second grade students started their school day by learning all about the importance of helmets when they attended the 5th annual "Hard Hats for Little Heads" event at Texas A&M University. The program used fun demonstrations to show the children how important helmets are in their daily lives.

Some of the demonstrations highlighted football, softball, baseball, equestrian, and bicycle helmets. To do this, a few Texas A&M athletes performed some of the skills used in their respective sports demonstrating the proper way to use each type of helmet and what could go wrong if they did not. The football players tackled each other to show how a helmet can fly off if it is not secured properly. Baseball and softball players demonstrated how a helmet can help protect your head from getting hit with the ball. Since the equestrian athletes could not bring their horses into the track, they talked about how their helmets helped in the event of a fall. Finally, three students raced into the track on bicycles proudly wearing their helmets.

At the end of the program, it was announced that each of the children would have a helmet waiting for them when they returned to their school. If they already have a helmet at home, they were encouraged to give it to a friend or family member who did not. By doing so, these second graders are able to teach others about what they learned at the event.

Here are three basic things to consider when using a helmet. Make sure it is:

1. Properly placed and secured
2. The correct size
3. The right type of helmet for the activity occurring.

Thousands of people are injured every year because they failed to simply wear a helmet properly. Accidents happen every day. Why take the risk of potentially hurting yourself or those you love? It takes two seconds to put on a helmet that could potentially save your life. Always remember to put safety first!
