Harvey Washbangers is undeniably one of my favorite places to go when it is time to wind down. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, the conversation is good, and I can even convince myself I am being productive by doing my laundry in the back.
I started going to Harvey’s at the beginning of last fall, after transferring to Aggieland from San Antonio. I quickly established myself as a regular customer, coming in almost too much. Guzzling down their patty-melts, tasting every new piece of pie, every new seasonal special, and every new burger- I always made sure to wash it down with a glass of Big Red.
So what is their special this season? Its their Chorizo Burger, and it’s a darn good eat. I have always been a patty-melt kind of guy, and boy do they have a killer patty-melt; but there is something about the Chorizo Burger that is extraordinary.
This handmade half-beef, half-chorizo cheeseburger is covered in pico avocado with tortilla chips stacked on top. Every order comes with fresh-cut French Fries that are salted just enough, still sparkling from just having come out of the kitchen.
Harvey Washbangers has definitely got this burger right, as it is a very popular special that is so good, it is being permanently added to the menu. One of my good buddies in the Corps came with me once and tried the chorizo burger while we did some laundry. He liked it so much, he went there again not two days later – and didn’t bring me. Granted, I was out of town when he went, but he admitted he just couldn’t resist the craving. When Superbowl Sunday came around, guess where my buddies wanted to go?
The Chorizo Burger is far from being the only hit burger at this joint. Another popular burger they serve is their Jalapeño Cream Cheese Burger, along with my repeated personal weakness; their patty-melt.
If you are looking for the perfect burger, there is no better place to begin your journey. Located just off Texas and Holleman between H-E-B and Yogurtland, you can’t pick a better place to start.
