Jackie Sherrill is known for many things at Texas A&M University. The two things that make him unique to me is that he created the “12th Man Kickoff Team” and he had the most wins against T.U. (whoop!)

The reason I brought this amazing man up is because I had the honor to meet him on Friday. It was finally my time to receive my Fightin’ Texas Aggie ring and I was lucky enough to run into coach Sherrill.

He greeted me as if I was a long lost best friend and congratulated me for receiving my ring. After exchanging a few words with me, he noticed that my brother, who’s in the Navy, was standing right next to me.

My brother, Jamie, wore his Navy uniform to the ceremony so Coach Sherrill immediately thanked him for his service. He asked my brother how many years he has served and how many times that he had been deployed. Jamie told him that he had gone four times before and would most likely be going again.

Sherrill concluded the conversation with reaching into his pocket to get a small silver token that had a guardian angel engraved on it. As he handed it to my brother, he said “I’ve given out 47 of these and 43 have been brought back. If I give this to you, you have to promise to bring it back.”

Coach Jackie Sherrill’s warmth and kindness was something that touched my family and me. On such a special day for me, that moment with Coach Sherrill will remain with me forever.

As we left, he gave me a signed copy of his book, “No Experience Required” and I can not wait to read about his impact at Texas A&M.
