I am a very scatterbrained person. I lose everything I touch. I lost my high school class ring. I lost the registration to my car once. I’ve lost countless homework items over the years. For Valentine’s Day last week, my boyfriend got me a beautiful ring. The next day I was cleaning my apartment and I realized the ring was no longer on my finger and I couldn’t remember where I had put it. After much searching, I found it on top of the microwave. Who knows why I chose that location. But I decided that I needed some kind of system to keep it safe, and thus the idea for this week’s DIY project was born.
For a white elephant gift exchange last Christmas, I received a small picture frame. It was too small to put in my room because it would get lost among the other decorations. But I figured it would make a great ring holder.
For this project, I needed that picture frame, a small roll of cork ($4.99 at Hobby Lobby), some straight pins ($2.99 at Hobby Lobby for quite a few), scissors and a marker.
First I took the glass out of the frame. I laid it on top of the cork and traced around it with the marker. I cut the cork out around the lines. Then I put the cork in the frame, followed by the glass and the backing. I probably didn’t need to put the glass back in the frame, but I couldn’t think of anywhere else to put it. The pins were too long to stick in there normally, so I bent then and stuck them down through the cork. This also made them much more sturdy. The pins I bought were already pretty and colorful, or else I probably would have painted them.
But that was it! It was a super simple project that took maybe 5 minutes of my time. Now I have the frame sitting on my dresser and I hang my ring on it whenever I’m sleeping or cleaning. This same idea would work for necklaces and bracelets too, with a larger picture frame.
