Second Day: Throw a Themed Celebration

What’s a holiday party without a fun theme everyone can take part in? Here’s some ideas that are sure to make your party unforgettable!

Tacky Sweater Party: Everyone has seen those lovely holiday related sweaters. Whether they have bells, Santa’s with real beards, or an abundance of snowmen pictured all over a turtle neck, tacky sweaters somehow make any party instantly more festive. Have your guests hit up your grandparent’s closet or your local thrift store and come dressed to the nines in their tackiest sweater. Up the anti and give a prize to the person with the tackiest get up!

12 Days of Appetizers Party: Invite your guests to bring their favorite appetizer, whatever that may be! Instead of stressing over cooking a huge meal, everyone can snack on a variety of foods and sample whatever they want. Take it a step further and make everyone bring their favorite dip or all Mexican appetizers. The possibilities are endless!

White Christmas Party: Fun fact, the biggest selling Christmas song of all time is White Christmas. That being said, it’s great song to turn into a theme! Decorate with a white tree, white garland, snowflakes, white lights and have your guests walk into a winter wonderland. Do it the Diddy way and require your guests wear all white as well. Add a touch of glitter and a few sparkles for an extra wow factor. This theme is always in style and easy to get creative with!

Ornament Exchange Party: Change up the typical gift exchange and throw an ornament exchange party! Ask your guests to bring a wrapped ornament ranging from $5 - $10 or whatever requirements you wish to put in place, only Santa ornaments, snowmen, non Christmas related… you get the point. . Upon arrival, assign a number to each package and after they’ve all arrived give each guest a number as well. Each person takes turns opening the package that matches their number and gets to add another ornament to their collection! Can’t beat that!

Christmas Carol Karaoke Party: We all remember Christmas carolers coming to our door singing their hearts out with the sounds of the holidays so why not set up your own caroling group? Instead of going door to door spreading Christmas cheer, set up a karaoke set and have everyone sing their favorite song whether that’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” Mariah Carey style or something off the Chipmunks Christmas album. Try to stick to a theme like all pop versions or only country reinterpretations. Another idea, have guests draw the songs out of a hat. That way you can control what they sing and get a kick out of what everyone ends up with as well!

Nightmare Before Christmas Theme: Do something completely unexpected and take inspiration from the classic, Nightmare Before Christmas movie, to turn your party into a unique, creepy holiday celebration. Everyone expects candy canes and Santa suits so this idea will be sure to set your party apart. Have your guests recreate the outfits depicted in the movie with black and white makeup, ragged clothing, a creepy Santa outfit, whoever they want to be! Include a picture of the characters from the movie in the invitation in case your guests have never seen it.

White Elephant Party: Everyone has been to one of these parties but admit it, they’re still somehow fun every time. Have each guest bring a gag gift, whether that’s a candy g-string, a funny pair of glasses, or the cheesiest “As Seen On TV” invention. Draw numbers and go in order allowing everyone to pick their prize. You can also allow steals if you’d like! Someone may really love that naughty Santa costume. Have fun with it and your guests will too!

'Tis the Season: We all tend to forget the reason for the season so another fantastic idea is to organize a party that gives back. Have your own food or clothing drive and have your guests bring can goods or clean out their closets and bring as much clothing as possible. Entice your guests with a goal and see how much of a different you all can make. Who knows, it could turn into an annual event! Plus, knowing you are helping local people have food on the table and clothing on their back this holiday is something everyone can get excited about!

A Not So Silent Northgate Night: Organize a night of pub crawl Christmas style! Bounce from bar to bar having everyone take a shot or order a drink and see how far you can get. You can set up certain drinks for specific bars, a Bloody Mary at Madhatter’s, saki bombs at the Sake Bar, etc. Also, have everyone dress up in a Santa costume, hat, as Rudolph or elf and tear up the town! If Northgate isn’t your style, organize an apartment or house crawl and set up stations through the rooms. Each station is a different drink or shot that your guests have to endure. By the end of the night, everyone will sure to be spreading Christmas cheer loud enough for all to hear I’m sure!

Christmahanukwanzaa Party: You never know if Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays is appropriate in this huge melting pot of a world we live in. Make sure you don't leave out anyone! Have an all denominations party so everyone can celebrate what they believe in. Decorate with the corresponding trinkets, Christmas decorations for Christmas, dreidels for Hanukkah and the kinara candle holder for Kwanzaa. You can also suggest your guests bring whatever food and any games that are traditional. Expand your horizons and learn about other holidays!
