Weight Watchers Tops ‘U.S. News’ 2013 List of Best Weight-Loss Plans

“U.S. News and World Report” released its annual list of diets today and Weight Watchers topped the list in multiple categories.

Out of eight categories, Weight Watchers was ranked No. 1 in Best Weight-Loss Diets, Best Commercial Diet Plans and Easiest Diets to Follow.

A panel of 22 experts, including dietitians and specialists in diabetes, heart health, human behavior, and weight loss, reviewed 29 diets in categories including short- and long-term weight loss, ease, safety and nutrition.

New this year was the category Best Plant-Based Diets, and in that category, the Mediterranean Diet came out on top, followed by the Flexitarian Diet, a “part time” vegetarian plan.

But getting back to weight loss, Weight Watchers, which scores foods on a proprietary Points system, was lauded in that category for short-and long-term weight loss results.

New for 2013, Weight Watchers introduced its 360 Program, which doesn’t touch the PointsPlus counting but instead helps people manage their food environments and offers solutions to situations like dining out, travel, and party temptations.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones has also introduced new frozen entrees, including four new breakfast items, five bagged meals, two new snacks and two new thin-crust pizzas that are less than 300 calories apiece.

Tied for second on the list was The Biggest Loser Diet, which is based on the weight-loss plan outlined in the “Biggest Loser” books such as “The Biggest Loser 30-Day Jump Start” (2009, Rodale, $21.99) and “The Biggest Loser 6 Weeks to a Healthier You” (2010, Rodale, $21.99). Also tied for second were Jenny Craig and the Raw Food Diet.

Jenny Craig has just introduced MyDays, which has Jenny Craig members use the food plan for five days and take two days off, while still making healthier choices.

The best overall diet was the DASH Diet, which is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It’s not a weight-loss diet per se, but its emphasis on low sodium, lots of fruits and vegetables and low sugar and low fat would produce weight loss for many people cleaning up their diets.

Who were the cellar dwellers? The Dukan Diet and the Paleo Diet showed up in the bottom of nearly all the lists.
