Juicing has recently become the popular thing to do in my family. And now we are all addicted to those juices – called “Naked.” As you may already be thinking, this has resulted in numerous jokes. “I’m going to get Naked at the store,” “Will you get me Naked too?” “I drink Naked at the family dinner table”…and on the jokes go.
So what is the deal anyway with this juicing trend? It’s an easy way to add a variety of vegetables to your diet and - I was shocked when I first started juicing stuff – one glass of juice may have several different whole fruits or vegetables in it! So it’s easy to get lots of nutrients to your body, easy for your body to absorb all of these nutrients, and adds new nutrients to your diet.
There are juice smoothies (like Nakeds) that are available at the store. Some other brands I’ve tried are Boathouse (which is my second preference) and Odwalla (which I don’t care for). Also, you can buy a variety of organic 100% juices at local grocery stores. Keep in mind though that the best way to get the most nutrients is to drink the juice right after it is taken out of the fruit.
Juicing with a juicer is the healthiest option. If you do have access to a juicer, I have a few recipes for you below of my favorite juiced drinks.
Peel and slice 3 medium sized oranges, 2 mangoes, and ½ of a pineapple. Slice 1 apple. Juice together and mix. If you want to add a little kick to the drink, try adding ½ of a lemon.
Slice and juice together 1 apple, 10 blueberries, 10 raspberries and 10 strawberries.
Slice 3 tomatoes, 1 green pepper, 1 jalapeno, 2 leaves of kale, and ½ of an onion. Juice together. To add a kick of flavor to this one, drop in 5 leaves of basil.
Juicing is my favorite way to stay healthy in college. It’s hard to find a time to fit lunch into the middle of my busy day, so on most days I’ll grab a juiced drink and throw it in my bag for later. It fills me up, its fast, and it’s so easy!
