Here in Texas, it seems that everyone loves guacamole. It is impossible to go to any of the great mexican restaurants in town and not immediately ask for a giant bowl of it. But I always feel guilty after scarfing it down. Granted, tortilla chips are not that great for you, but the actual guacamole is so jam-packed with vitamins, that eating it is actually beneficial for your body.
The main ingredient in guacamole is avocados (Duh), which offer one of the highest concentrations of essential vitamins out of any fruit. Avocados contain compounds that are able to seek out pre-cancerous cells and destroy them, drastically lowering the chances of getting breast, prostrate, and many other types of cancers. It contains folate and B6, which are proven to help maintain a healthy heart and aid child development in pregnant women. Avocados also contain a substance called Glutathione, which is an antioxidant important in preventing aging and heart disease. It is also high in levels of potassium and a compound called "beta-sitosterol" which are both good for lowering and maintaining low blood pressure. To obtain the amount of potassium in one avocado, you would have to eat 2-3 bananas! Avocados also regulate blood sugar levels and promote good eye health.
While avocados contain all of these nutritional benefits, they also contain anywhere from 270-370 calories per avocado, depending on their size. So by all means, enjoy guacamole, just cut down on the amount of chips that you eat it with, and do not have it everyday. Mix up how you get theses different nutrients in order to avoid some of the large amounts of calories in avocados, but definitely keep avocados in your diet as a weekly or even biweekly treat!
