Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman released the following message Thursday in what Aggie Athletics say will be periodic messages from him:

Howdy! It is such a lift in spirits to say the official Texas A&M greeting to a group of Aggies and get an enthusiastic “Howdy!” in return. I don’t think that will ever get old!

It’s been a whirlwind since we hit the ground running in Aggieland about a month ago. Just getting to know the coaches and staff at Texas A&M and getting settled into my office would have been plenty, but when you mix in the inaugural Southeastern Conference football game and myriad of activities associated with kicking off in the SEC; the arrival of College GameDay; traveling across the state to attend Champions Council events; going to fall sports competitions; stopping by practices; and getting up to speed on the Kyle Field project … you get the picture, it’s been a busy first 30 days on the job.

I want to thank the 12th Man for making this transition as smooth and welcoming as I could have imagined. All the great things I’d heard about the Aggies through the years have been true, and I have discovered even more wonderful traditions and school pride than I knew about.

One of my first experiences with the many great traditions at Texas A&M was Midnight Yell Practice prior to the Florida game. I was amazed by what I experienced. Having 40,000 people come out to the football stadium at midnight for what other schools would say is a pep rally is something that simply doesn’t happen anywhere else. People might take it for granted at Texas A&M, but for someone from the outside, seeing it for the first time was amazing. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive was also in attendance and was equally impressed.

Texas A&M established a wonderfully positive reputation in the SEC throughout the inaugural weekend. We had numerous letters, emails and calls from the ESPN GameDay announcers, the Florida fans and the SEC staff complimenting the Aggies on everything from fan behavior to athletics administrative support to facilities to Yell Practice. This is what the college experience is supposed to be about, and I’m incredibly excited to be part of a university that values education, embraces tradition and focuses on its student-athletes. I look forward to the challenge and opportunity of leading Texas A&M into the future.

Even though it seems like the semester just started, Aggie Athletics is in full swing. Soccer, volleyball, football and cross country are well into their seasons, and equestrian, golf and tennis are getting the fall portions of their schedules underway. Earlier this week, the baseball and softball teams started fall practice. It’s a great time to be an Aggie, and I hope to see you out supporting our teams in the future.

Gig’em!
Eric Hyman
