The Aggie football team will take part in a community service project with the Twin City Mission as part of the Big Event. The team will arrive at Twin City Mission (410 S. Randolph, Bryan) for a 5 p.m. Friday (Mar. 22) dedication ceremony of new playground equipment that will be named in honor of Joey Villavisencio, better known as “Joey V.” The parents of Joey V., Victor and Christine Villavisencio, will be in attendance at the ceremony.
“Our players donated their own money prior to Christmas to purchase playground equipment and some of our guys installed the equipment,” Aggie head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. “The players also made a decision to dedicate this playground area at Twin City Mission in honor of Joey V.”
“Joey was a great example of an Aggie,” Sumlin said. “He did everything to the best of his abilities, was a tremendous student, an excellent football player and an even better person. You can tell what an impact he had by the way our players still think of his selfless service and caring attitude.”
The Aggie football team teamed with the Twin City Mission for the past several years in volunteering for various projects including improving the grounds at the facility and serving families. During Christmas, the team hosted families and children from the facility complete with appearances by Santa Claus.
It was the final day on campus for the Aggie football players before Christmas break in 2011 before leaving to spend time with their respective families. Joey took part in hosting the families and children from Twin City Mission before traveling to see his family in Jacksonville. An automobile crash took his life that day.
The 31st annual Big Event, the largest one-day student-run service project in the nation, is set for Saturday, Mar. 23 and is a way for Texas A&M students to say thanks to the local community for their support throughout their collegiate careers. Due to the Saturday football scrimmage and the Aggie Youth Experience, the football team wanted to make sure and participate, just one day early.
After the dedication ceremony, the players will assist with other projects surrounding the area and the facility.
