The Texas A&M soccer team was the recipient of its fifth-consecutive Aggie Cup award, given annually by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). All of the athletic teams at A&M are judged in six disciplines – athletes supporting athletes, community service, career development, team enhancement, personal development, and academics.

Student-athletes received points toward their team totals for a myriad of accomplishments, including attending academics, career and personal development-based workshops, as well as for community involvement and for supporting fellow Aggies at athletic events. Points are also awarded for academic endeavors, both individual and team-based. The competition began on June 1, 2012 and ran through the academic school year.

"The Aggie Cup is a competition among all of the ultra-competitive student athletes at A&M," head coach G Guerrieri said. "The lessons our ladies learn while taking part in all aspects of the year-long Aggie Cup competition really are a valuable part of their college experience. We are very proud of our student-athletes. We consider winning the Aggie Cup as achieving part of our mission statement of Building Champions."

A&M soccer has shown avid involvement on campus and in the Bryan-College Station area for many years. Recent community projects include volunteering with Nothing but Nets, Hard Hats for Little Heads, raising money for cancer research in Relay for Life, and also conducting numerous free youth soccer clinics around the Brazos Valley and across the country.

“For the last five years, the team that has hoisted the Aggie Cup has been the Soccer team,” said Zerick Rollins, Scholastic Supervisor in the Center for Student-Athlete Services, who oversees the Aggie Cup competition. “While the Aggie Cup has been highly contested each year, the soccer team has found a way to come away with the trophy. Not only have they done a good job of being extremely active as a team, but Coach G and his staff are quite the strategists as they have done a good job of being intentional in accumulating points. I think it’s fair to categorize their string of success as a dynasty, but it will be interesting to see how long it will last.”

The Aggie Cup provides coaches and student-athletes the opportunity to promote success and unity in the five commitment areas of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Through a fun and challenging competition, the Aggie Cup encourages involvement on many levels. The Aggie Cup is a competition use to provide coaches and student-athletes the opportunity to promote success, unity, and development.

“As an athletic department, we are always looking for ways to holistically develop our students and the Aggie Cup definitely provides ample opportunity,” Rollins said. “One of the common threads of student-athletes is that they enjoy and thrive in competition and what better way to fully develop our students than to have them compete in areas that will aid in this process.”
