WASHINGTON COUNTY, Texas Verizon's new plan for a cell phone tower in Washington County has many people in the area fighting mad.

Carole Sommer Henry lives directly across from where, she said, Verizon plans to build the nearly 300-foot-tall tower in the 4600 block of FM 390. That's about 13 miles north of Brenham.

Henry said not only will the tower be an eye sore, but will be built near the historic La Bahia trail.

Henry said once word got out about the tower, the calls started pouring in from land owners near and far. So much so, she said she and others decided to start a group.

It's called "Citizens Against Verizon's Enourmous Antenae Tower", or CAVEAT.

"This was important to us," said Henry. "They've jumped on the band wagon. And we haven't had one negative comment from anybody.

Henry said they've filed a complaint with the FCC. She said it's not the tower that bothers them so much as the location.

"You don't have to destroy something to have progress," said Henry. "We're not against the progress. We know it has to come, but let's save what we have."

Bill Bosse owns the land the tower would be built on. He said he's open mined about the tower, and wouldn't mind seeing it built.

"There is a dead spot, and it needs filing in," said Bosse.

Bosse said he's met with Henry and other opposed to the tower. He said he thinks the tower won't be as much of an eye sore as the people of CAVEAT think, but he's open to putting the tower someplace else.

The ultimate decision is up to Verizon and the FCC.
