(The Huffington Post) - A Grass Valley, Calif., man is accused of spiking his girlfriend's drink with Visine eyedrops so that she would suffer from diarrhea.
Shayne Carpenter, 27, was arrested on poisoning and domestic violence charges after his girlfriend, who was feeling ill, discovered he'd been bragging about the crime in text messages, ABC News affiliate KXTV News 10 reported.
Police said messages sent to Carpenter's friends boasted that if "She's going to be talking crap then she's going to be crapping." The incident reportedly occurred following a fight.
Carpenter allegedly confessed to police. His girlfriend was treated at a hospital while Carpenter was jailed. He was released Friday after posting a $25,000 bail.
The Visine diarrhea-inducing episode is similar to the prank popularized by the movie "Wedding Crashers." In fact, two years ago a college student actually told police that the film inspired her to drip the solution in her roommate's water bottles. Her excuse didn't clear her, however -- she was sentenced to 90 days in prison.
And last year, a woman from Pennsylvania faced assault charges after admitting to repeatedly putting Visine in her boyfriend's drinking water over a three year period.
While the Visine spike is commonly thought to cause a few hours of explosive diarrhea, ingesting Visine can be more detrimental. According to healthguide.org, side effects include severe breathing difficulty, respiratory failure, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.
