PHELAN, Calif. (KTLA) — Deputies have arrested a 20-year old man accused of stealing more than $550 in cookie money from a Girl Scout troop.

The suspect, Colin Sawyer, was arrested just hours after surveillance video of the crime was released.

Deputies saw Sawyer at a gas station near Phelan Rd. and Baldy Mesa Rd. and took him into custody without incident.

The theft occurred Sunday evening outside a Stater Bros. market located at 4059 Phelan Road.

The girls were packing up after a day of cookie sales, and had left the money they earned in a bag on a table.

According to police, a young man on a skateboard rode by and swiped the bag of money before fleeing.

One of the Girl Scouts chased after the suspect, but fell and suffered minor scrapes.

The theft was captured on surveillance video.

Anyone with information is asked to call the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
