College students in Texas are pushing for legislation that grants the right to carry guns on campus in the wake of last year's massacre at Virginia Tech.

Utah is currently the only state that specifically allows the carrying of concealed weapons at public universities. Colorado State made a similar decision after a 2003 state law allowed schools the ability to create and implement their own policies.

Texans won the right to carry concealed weapons in 1995 after an
emotional legislative debate. That debate did not include college campuses.

Now the state is caught up in the new national debate to change that law.

Republican state Representative Joe Driver of Garland, recently
held a hearing on this issue. Driver said he plans to introduce a bill
to remove college campuses from the list of places where guns are
prohibited. He said he is unsure the bill will get enough support.

Rice University Police Chief Bill Taylor explained to the panel that the
limited amount of training provided to concealed handgun licensees
does not prepare them to do the job of law enforcement officers.

I believe it is a great idea to have concealed carry rights on college campus'. They are not becoming law enforcement officers or taking over law enforcement duties. They are simply obeying the concealed carry law, and providing immediate protection, and causing troublemakers to think twice or more before attempting any attacks such as the Virginia Tech situation.

I have been through a CHL class, as has most of my family. I was taught that when in doubt, dont act. Ir you are not sure of the threat, dont engage it. I was a college student once as well, and I didnt have the money for a CHL or a gun. I think it is a great idea to allow lawful carry on campus. I just think the ones opposed are over estimating the amount(of guns) that will actually be there on campus. you also have to be 21 to obtain a CHL so that knocks out most of the young freshmen and sophmores. I would feel much better knowing my kid could carry his gun on campus. I am also a former police officer and since the beginning of the CHL program never had one CHL holder commit a gun crime.

Will we be making the local Stop and Rob take down their sign and allow CHL's to carry in the store? And my home...can you just walk in with a gun without my permission? Will S&W 686P take away my economic stimulus check for not allowing it? Oh yeah...those properties are private property...and so is Rice!
