A challenger has emerged for College Station's mayoral spot.

Former councilwoman Nancy Berry has filed to run against current mayor Ben White.

Berry served one term on the council in Place 6 before being defeated by Dave Ruesink in 2006. She has served in leadership roles for numerous organizations over the years in addition to volunteer work around the community.

“I believe my work in the community, both as an elected official and volunteer, gives me the background and experience our city needs,” Berry said in a statement released Monday. “College Station is a dynamic community. It is the home of one of the world’s great universities and its store of intellectual resources. Our city has room to grow -- with thoughtful planning and citizen input. Our fellow citizens care about their neighbors and their city: they’re engaged and want to contribute to our shared future.”

Berry also pointed out what she believed were missteps in recent years by the current elected leaders.

“Our city faces several challenges, most notably the failure of elected officials to listen to citizens," Berry said. "We’re spending too much on costly litigation, and are missing out on major development opportunities because the current mayor and administration are not cooperating effectively with Bryan and Brazos County. Another major challenge facing the city is that budget reductions at local businesses and Texas A&M will affect city revenues, and the city must plan for it.”

White is seeking a second term as mayor. He previously served on the council in Place 1 before winning the city's top elected spot.

Filing for the May municipal elections runs through next Monday.
