There is a new mayor in College Station.
Former city council member Nancy Berry spoiled Mayor Ben White's bid for reelection 59-41 percent. Berry ended with 2,294 votes to White's 1,585.
During her campaign, Berry expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the city council saying city leaders were not being responsive to its citizens. She pointed to controversies such as red-light cameras, Wellborn incorporation and the convention center as examples.
"Ben's done a wonderful job for the city and I congratulate him and very proud of the race we both ran," Berry said. "On the issues, it was never personal, and so I thank him for his service to the city and I'm looking forward to working for the citizens of College Station."
White had served on the city council for part of a term before he ran successfully for mayor in 2007.
"Losing is not fun, but I'm pleased with what has happened," White said. "I'm pleased with the three years I've had as Mayor and the two years prior to that on Council. I think that the city, contrary to what has been said recently in all the rhetoric of the campaign, the city has moved forward."
Joining Berry on the College Station city council will be newcomer Jess Fields who defeated Tony Jones 52-48 percent for the Place 2 seat. Fields garnered 1,945 votes to 1,830 for Jones.
Fields was down 57-43 percent to Jones, a former city councilmember and Brazos County commissioner. But Fields, a cigar shop owner in his 20s, chipped away at the lead as the ballots cast Saturday were counted until he won in the final boxes.
